1946 – He was born on the 1st day of September this year in Douglas, Isle of Man, to English parents.
1958 – His family moved to Brisbane, Australia, settling in one of the city’s poorest suburbs, Cribb Island, which was subsequently obliterated to make way for Brisbane Airport.
1970 – He has been married to wife Linda this year.
1978 – He became the only songwriter to have four straight number one hits in the USA breaking the John Lennon and Paul McCartney 1964 record.
1980 – He wrote and produced albums, which sold millions for other acts during this year.
2004 – He received Honorary Degrees of Doctor of Music from The University of Manchester in May of this year.
2005 – He was named CBE (Commanders of The British Empire), presented to them by Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace.
2006 – He and along with around 4,500 other musicians, took out a full-page advertisement in the Financial Times newspaper calling for the British Government to extend the existing 50 years copyright protection for sound recordings in the United Kingdom.
