1892 – He was born on the 15th day of December of this year in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. He was an avid collector of art and antiquities, and his collection forms the basis of the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, California.

 

1914 - He enrolled at the University of Southern California, then at Berkeley before graduating in this year from Magdalen College, Oxford with degrees in economics and political science.

 

1916 – By this year, He worked during the summers on his father's oil fields in Oklahoma. Running his own oil company in Tulsa, he made his first million.

 

1917 – He announced that he was retiring to become a Los Angeles-based playboy. Although he eventually returned to business, Getty had lost his father's respect.

 

1930 - Just before George Franklin Getty died in this year, he believed that Jean Paul would destroy the family company, and told him so.

 

1945 - After World War II, Getty took a gamble on oil rights in the Middle East.

 

1949 – He secured the oil rights in Saudi Arabia's half of the Neutral Zone, a barren area between Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

 

1959 - Getty stopped living out of hotel rooms and established his home and offices at Sutton Place, a sixteenth-century, seven-hundred-acre manor outside London, England.

 

1973 - His grandson, J. Paul Getty III, was kidnapped in Italy in this year. Though he was returned for a ransom (exchanged for money), part of his ear had been slashed off.

 

1976 – He died on the 6th day of June of this year in London, England, UK.
