Francisco de Bobadilla
1499 - Appointed to succeed Christopher Columbus as governor of Spain's new territories in the Americas by Ferdinand and Queen Isabella.
1500 - He upheld accusations of mismanagement made against Columbus, and had Columbus sent back to Spain.
1502 - Replaced as governor of Hispaniola by Nicolas de Ovando.
- His ship was caught in a hurricane, and he drowned upon returning to Spain.
