Falwell, Jerry Lamon
1933 - Born on August 11th in Lynchburg, Virginia.
1950 - He graduated from Brookville High School, Lynchburg, Virginia.
1956 - He graduated from Baptist Bible College, Springfield.
- Jerry Falwell was ordained a Baptist minister. He immediately started his own church, the Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Virginia, where he has been pastor ever since.
1958- Married Macel Pate on April 12th. They had two sons, one daughter.
1968 - He began telecasting his weekly sermons.
1971 - He founded Lynchburg Baptist College, later called Liberty University.
1979 - He was a founder of the Moral Majority, a political action umbrella group that fought to enact Bible-based values as American law.
1984 - He sued Larry Flynt's Hustler Magazine for libel and intentional infliction of emotional distress, for a satirical page in the magazine wherein a caricature of him remembered his first sexual encounter -- with his mother, in an outhouse.
1987 - When fellow televangelist Jim Bakker was convicted of fraud and imprisoned, he maneuvered behind the scenes to take control of Bakker's Praise The Lord (PTL) TV ministry. While Bakker was in prison, Falwell led PTL into bankruptcy.
1988 - America's highest court ruled that he was a public figure and thus fair game for satire. More recently, he twice sued an internet site for mocking him, alleging trademark violations and libel. Both complaints were thrown out of court.
1989 - The Moral Majority disbanded.
1993 - He starred in the movie, "The Last Party".
1997 - When Ellen DeGeneres came out as a gay figure, he called her "Ellen Degenerate" and demanded that sponsors yank their advertising from her sitcom Ellen.
2001 - When George W. Bush took office as President and established a White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives, he said it was a great idea, so long as Muslim groups are disqualified from receiving the money because, according to him, their faith teaches hate.
2004 - Liberty College added a law school, where he said he hopes to produce lawyers who will be "as far to the right as Harvard is to left." The school's mission is to commingle the Bible with the U.S. Constitution, and "re-establish the connection" between church and state. - He appeared in the movie, "The Hunting of the President".
