1789 - Born in West Liberty, Ohio County, Virginia on the 28th of December.  

1816 - Ewing commenced the practice of law in Lancaster, Ohio.

1830 - He was elected to the U.S. Senate as a Whig and served a single term.

1836 - He was unsuccessful in seeking a second term.

1841 - Ewing served as Secretary of the Treasury on the 4th of March.

         - In September, serving under Presidents William Henry Harrison and John Tyler.

1850-1851 - Ewing was appointed to the Senate to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Thomas Corwin.

         - Ewing was unsuccessful in seeking re-election.

1868 - Ewing was appointed by President Andrew Johnson to a third post as Secretary of War in 1868 following the firing of Edwin M. Stanton but the Senate, still outraged at Johnson's firing of Stanton—which had provoked Johnson's impeachment—refused to act on the nomination.

1871 - Died on the 26th of October in Lancaster Ohio.
