1923 - Born on February 28th in Highland Falls, New York.

1944 - Served with the 1st Infantry Division in World War II. He landed at Omaha Beach on June 6th during the Normandy invasion. He was awarded several decorations, including the Combat Infantryman's Badge, Silver Star Medal, Bronze Star Medal, and three Purple Hearts.

1973 - Married to his childhood sweetheart, Mary Ann Amelio.

1990 - Won Broadway's Tony Award as Best Actor (Featured Role - Play) for portraying Big Daddy in a revival of Tennessee Williams' "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof".

         - He appeared in the television series, Evening Shade as Dr. Harlan Elldridge.

1991 - Received a Golden Globe award for The Kennedys of Massachussetts.

1996-2004 - Has played Santa Claus five times to date, in It Nearly Wasn't Christmas (TV), Mrs. Santa Claus (TV), Elmo Saves Christmas (V), Mr. St. Nick (TV), and A Boyfriend for Christmas (TV). Ironically, none of these films was released in theaters and two of them begin with titles of a man or woman. His St. Nick is rarely the main character and is portrayed as somewhat grumpier than most depictions.
