Douglas Benton Phillips was born in Baton Rouge, La in July 1954. Douglas was the eldest of three boys. He lived in Lake Providence, LA until graduated with honors from Briarfield Academy in 1972. Douglas attended Louisiana Tech University and graduated magna cum laude in in 1976 with a BA in chemistry. He was an active member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity and Campus Crusade for Christ while attending Louisana Tech University.
In March 1975 he married Kathryn Ball from Eudora, Arkansas. Moving to Dallas, TX in 1976, Douglas attended Baylor College of Dentistry; graduating magna cum laude in 1979 with a Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree. Then he enrolled as a captain in the US Air Force Dental Corps during which time he completed a general dental practice residency at Eglin AFB (from 1979 to 1980). He then served at England Air Force Base in Alexandria, LA as the dental prosthetic lab officer at the base dental clinic from 1980 to 1982. He earned the Air Force Commendation Medal for exemplary service during his tour of duty with the US Air Force.
Douglas Phillips has three children. His hobbies include hiking, fishing, and cooking. One of his favorite activities is cooking for family and friends. He attends Grace Community Church in Mills River, North Carolina where he is involved in the discipleship ministry. He and Kathryn are now empty nesters with two Carin Terriers who keep the home lively.
After his tour of duty in the US Air Force, Douglas Phillips moved to Crossett, AR in 1982 where he established a private general dentistry practice. In 1998 he moved to Asheville, North Carolina to assume the responsibility and ownership of a restorative dental practice for adults. He expanded that restorative practice and currently practices in Asheville, NC as the managing senior partner of Phillips & Schmitt , DDS, PA . Douglas Phillips has established himself as a restorative dentist with a focus on cosmetic and complex dental conditions so that his patients can have confident and healthy smiles. He has completed all course content at The Pankey Institute in Key Biscayne, FL and has served as a Pankey Mentor to other dentists attending the institute. He completed advanced prosthodontic – dental implant training at the Misch Implant Institute and is recognized as a Fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantology.
He is an active member of the American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics , an organization that fosters excellence in the field of prosthodontics, implants and esthetic dentistry through mutual study, participation, and cooperation. In 2011 he was appointed as a Visiting Faculty Member of Spear Education in Scottsdale, Arizona after completing all course work at the Seattle Institute for Advanced Dental Education. He mentors other dentists at Spear Education at least one or two times a year.
In 2012 Douglas Phillips passed the written examination for accreditation with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry ( AACD). At the present time, he is completing his clinical course requirements for the oral examination process. Dr. Phillips has been an active supporting member of the AACD for more than 10 years.
Since many of his patients and friends have issues with snoring and obstructive sleep apnea that are adversely affecting their health, he is working with their physicians treat their patients with oral appliance therapy. Douglas became an active member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine ( AADSM) in 2012 and is involved in pursuing diplomate certification of the AADSM.
Douglas cares for many adult patients throughout western North Carolina. Some of his patients come from out of state, as far away as Florida, Virginia, and Louisiana.
