1939 - Carl Dennis, born on the 17th of September in St. Louis, Missouri. He an American poet and author.

1961 - Attended Oberlin College and the University of Chicago prior to receiving his bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota.

1966 - Received his Ph.D. in English literature from the University of California, Berkeley.

       - He became an assistant professor of English at University at Buffalo.

1974 - Published his first book A House of My Own.

1984 - 2000 - Received several prizes for his poetry in addition to the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, including a Fellowship at the Rockefeller Study Center in Bellagio, Italy, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Poetry, and the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize.

2001 - His Poetry as Persuasion, an Essay for Writers, his first book of literary criticism, was published by the University of Georgia Press.

2002 - Wrote Practical Gods, which won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry.

2004 - His look for Dennis’ Selected Poems, a selection of poems from each of his eight books.
