1909 - Born Shuji Tsushima on the 19th of June.

1927 - His life only started to change when his idol writer Ryknosuke Akutagawa committed suicide.

1929 - On the 10th of December, the night before year-end exams that he had no hopes of passing, Shuji attempted to commit suicide by taking an overdose of sleeping pills, but he survived and managed to graduate the following year.

1933 - Shuji wrote at a feverish pace and used the pen name "Osamu Dazai" for the first time in a short story called Train.

1935 - He finished The Final Years, intended to be his farewell to the world, and tried to hang himself on the 19th of March.

1947 - He depicted a dissolute life in postwar Tokyo in Biyon no Tsuma.

         - In July Dazai's best-known work, Shayo depicting the decline of the Japanese nobility after World War II was published, propelling the already popular writer into a celebrity.

1948 - Died on the 13th of June.
