1807 - Born on the 17th of February in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, U.S.A.
1825 - He graduated in College of New Jersey (now Princeton University).
1837 - He was elected in New Jersey Senate.
1838 - He became associate judge of the New Jersey Supreme Court.
1842 - On the 2nd of July, he was appointed to the United States Senate.
1845 - He was re-elected in New Jersey Legislature as a Whig (a Political Party in New Jersey).
1856 - He was selected by the nascent Republican Party as their first nominee for Vice-President of the
United States in the U.S. Presidential election but he was unsuccessful.
1861 - He served as a New Jersey Attorney General.
- He was appointed by President Lincoln (16th President of the United States) as a Minister of France.
1864 - He died on the 1st of December in Paris.
