1843 - He began to work for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad as a brakeman and conductor.

1865 - Elected a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates.

1871 - 1883 - Elected Senator from West Virginia.

1889 - He represented the U.S. at the Pan-American Conferences.

1901 -1916 - Acted as chairman of the permanent Pan American Railway Committee.

1901 - Once again he represented the U.S. at the Pan-American Conferences.

1904 - Became the Democratic nominee for Vice President on a ticket with Alton B. Parker.

1916 - He died in Washington, DC on the 11th of March at age 92.
