1808 - Thomas Cook was born on November 22nd in Quick Close, Melbourne, Derbyshire. The founder of Thomas Cook and Son travel agency.

1818 - He started work at the tender age of ten learning the trade of market gardening. This was followed by wood turning and printing.

1828 - He became a Baptist minister, a member of the Temperance Society in Market Harborough.

1841 - He embarked on a career that would revolutionize the way people traveled around the world. He invented the idea of Travel Excursion on July 5th. The very first excursion took almost 600 people by train, in nine open carriages on the ten-mile journey.

1879 - His son persuaded him to retire and moved back to Leicestershire.
