Chambers, Ephraim
1680 - Born in Kendal, Westmorland, England. British encyclopaedist whose work formed a basis for the 18th-century French Encyclopaedists.
- He was apprenticed to a globe-maker in London, but having conceived the plan of his Cyclopaedia, or Universal Dictionary of Arts and Sciences, he devoted himself entirely to it.
1728 - The first edition appeared by subscription, in two folio volumes, dedicated to King George II.
- The first edition of his Cyclopaedia; or, An Universal Dictionary of Arts and Sciences appeared, and its success led to Chambers' election to the Royal Society.
1735 - Chambers wrote for the Literary Magazine.
1740 - Died on May 15th in London, England.
1742 - Translated the History and Memoirs of the Royal Academy of Sciences at Paris, and the Practice of Perspective from the French of Jean Dubreuil.
