1935 - Born on February 15th in Grand Rapids, Michigan. American astronaut selected by NASA to fly on the first Apollo manned mission.
1948 - Chaffee branched out his interests once again by becoming a member of a local Boy Scout troop.
1953 - Roger Chaffee graduated in the top fifth of his class from Central High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
- NROTC offered Chaffee a Naval scholarship and in September, he began the fall semester at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago.
1954 - Chaffee was scheduled to report for duty onboard the battleship.
1957 - Chaffee received a B.S. in aeronautical engineering from Purdue University and immediately joined the Navy.
- Married to Martha Horn.
1958 - He reported for aircraft carrier training duty on November 18th.
1963 - Chaffee was selected by NASA as a member of its third group of astronauts.
- He was assigned with Grissom and White to fly the first Apollo capsule on an 11-day mission in Earth orbit.
1962 - Accepted the invitation and moved his family to Dayton, Ohio in order to study at the Air Force Institute of Technology at Wright-Patterson AFB.
1967 - Died along with crewmates Gus Grissom and Edward White during a launch pad test at the Kennedy Space Center on January 27th.
