Catt, Carrie Chapman
1859 - Carrie Lane was born on January 9th, in Ripon, Wisconsin.
1866 - When she was seven years old, the Lane family moved to Charles City, Iowa, where Carrie Lane attended school.
1877 - After graduating from high school, she attended Iowa Agricultural College, which is today Iowa State University.
1883 - She became the superintendent of schools for Mason City, Iowa. Lane was one of the first women in the United States to hold this position.
1885 Carrie Lane married Leo Chapman, a newspaper publisher. Carrie Chapman helped her husband run the newspaper and wrote about women's rights in a feature called "Woman's World".
1890 - Lane graduated from college at the top of her class—and as the only woman in her graduating class. After college Lane worked as a teacher, a law clerk, and a school principal.
1887 - Carrie Chapman returned to Iowa. There she became involved in the women's suffrage movement. Eventually she was elected head of the Iowa Woman Suffrage Association. She then began working for the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA).
1890 - Married George Catt, a supporter of women's suffrage. Together they traveled to conventions and political rallies to speak out for women's rights.
1900 - Catt followed Anthony as president of the NAWSA. As president she worked to organize women's suffrage groups to push for an amendment to the United States Constitution.
1902 - Catt founded the International Woman Suffrage Alliance (IWSA) to unite women around the world in the fight for suffrage.
1904 - She resigned as president of the NAWSA to take care of her husband, who was ill.
1919 - She founded League of Women Voters.
1920 - On August 26th, all of Catt's hard work paid off when the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution was approved. Women had won the right to vote.
1925 - Catt founded the national Committee on the Cause and Cure of War to work for world peace.
- The first chairman of National Committee on the Cause and Cure of War.
1947 - She died on March 9th, at her home in New Rochelle, New York.
