Carter, Nell Hardy
1948 - Nell Hardy Carter, born on the 13th of September in Birmingham, Alabama. She was a Tony Award-winning American singer and film, stage, and television actress.
1964 - She was raped at age 16, and later endured three miscarriages.
1974 - She appeared alongside Bette Davis in the stage musical Miss Moffat, based on Davis' earlier film The Corn is Green.
1978 - She broke into stardom in the musical Ain't Misbehavin, for which she won a Tony Award.
- Was cast in the role of Effie White Broadway musical Dreamgirls, but departed the production during development to take a television role on Ryan's Hope in Los Angeles.
1979 - She had a part in the Miloš Forman-directed musical film adaptation of Hair.
1981 - 1987 -She also took a role on television's The Misadventures of Sheriff Lobo, before landing a steady role as housekeeper Nell Harper on the sitcom Gimme a Break!, for which she earned Golden Globe and Emmy Award nominations.
1982 - She also won an Emmy for a televised performance.
1992 - She had surgery to remove aneurysms.
2003 - Died from heart disease complicated by diabetes and obesity on the 23rd of January.
