Carstens, Karl Walter

Died: 1992 AD, at 77 years of age.
1914 - He was born in Bremen on the 14th of December.
1933-1936 - Carstens studied law and political science at the universities of Frankfurt, Dijon, Munich, Königsberg, and Hamburg.
1940 - Carstens joined the NSDAP, reportedly to avoid detrimental treatment when he was a law clerk.
1949 - He received a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree from Yale Law School.
1955 - He entered the CDU.
1960 - In July, Carstens entered government service as a secretary of state in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
1966 - He first served as secretary of state in the Ministry of Defence.
1968 - He served as Director of the Chancellor's Office.
1972 - Carstens was first elected into the Bundestag.
1973-1976 - He was the chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group.
1979 - On the 23rd of May, Carstens was elected as the fifth President of the Federal Republic of Germany.
1983 - On the 7th of January, President Carstens nonetheless dissolved the Bundestag and called for new elections.
- In February, Carstens' decision was approved by the Federal Constitutional Court so that general elections could take place.
1984 - He decided not to seek a second term on account of his age and left office on the 30th of June.
1992 - He died on the 30th of May.
