1896 - Carothers was born in Burlington Iowa on the 27th of April.

         - Carothers attended public school in Des Moines, Iowa, where he was known as a conscientious student.

1915 - He enrolled in the Capital City Commercial College in Des Moines, where his father, Ira, was Vice-President, completing the accountancy and secretarial curriculum in July.

         - In September, he entered Tarkio College in Missouri. Carothers so excelled in chemistry that even before his graduation he was made a chemistry instructor.

1920 - He graduated from Tarkio at the age of 24 with a bachelor of science degree.

1921 - He went to the University of Illinois for his master of arts degree.

1922 - Carothers held a one-year appointment as a chemistry instructor at the University of South Dakota.

1924 - He went back to the University of Illinois to study for his Ph.D under Dr. Roger Adams.

1937 - He died on the 29th of April.
