1845 - Born in London, on the 6th of August the eldest son of George, Marquess of Lorne and the former Lady Elizabeth Sutherland-Leveson-Gower.

1868 - Private secretary to his father, the secretary of state for India.
- Lorne represented Argyllshire as a Liberal in the House of Commons.
1878 - He became the Canada's youngest Governor General at the age of 33.
1880 - Founded the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.
1882 - A devoted patron of the arts and letters, Lorne founded the Royal Society of Canada.
1895 - He sat as MP for Manchester South.
1910 - An author of prose and poetry, his writings include Memories of Canada and Scotland, Imperial Federation, Canadian Pictures, Passages from the Past (2 vols.) and Yesterday and To-day in Canada.
