1844 – He was born on the 12th day of October of this year in New Orleans, Louisiana.
1865 - He served in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. At the end of the war in this year, he went into journalism, writing for the New Orleans Picayune, where he would remain through 1879.
1873 – He began to publish stories in Scribner's Monthly.
1879 – He published “Old Creole Days”, a collection of his stories drawing on the lore of old New Orleans, soon gained him national success and helped to popularize the ‘local color’ movement then emerging in American fiction.
1884 - Cable moved to Massachusetts. He became friends with Mark Twain, and the two writers did speaking tours together.
1885 – He wrote his “Silent South”, a collection of his essays and lectures calling for reform, led him to move to Northampton, MA. He continued to publish novels, several dealing with the contrast between Northern and Southern manners and morals.
1925 – He passed away on the 31st day of January this year in St. Petersburg, Florida.
