1905 - Born on August 23rd in Bronx, New York. American cartoonist.
1919 - Ernie Bushmiller left high school at 14 years old to work as a copy boy for the New York World newspaper.
1925 - Ernie Bushmiller was given the job of drawing the shapely comic strip flapper Fritzi Ritz when its originator moved onto another comic strip.
- The ambitious teenager studied art after his workdays at the National Academy of Design, so when Larry Whittington decided to leave his three-year-old comic creation Fritzi Ritz, Ernie was recruited to take over.
1933 - Ernie added Fritzi's small but boisterous niece Nancy to the Fritzi Ritz strip.
1938 - Creator of the famous American comic strip "Nancy".
- Ernie changed the name of the strip to Nancy, and added Sluggo Smith to the cast of characters.
1960 - Ernie held the record as youngest cartoonist with a nationally syndicated cartoon.
1963 - The "Nancy and Sluggo" comic book series ended.
1976 - The National Cartoonists Society honoured Ernie with the Reuben Award for Cartoonist of the Year.
1982 - Died of heart attack on August 15th.
1995 - Nancy hit the big time. "Nancy and Sluggo" were promoted as part of a United States Postal Service special series of postage stamps celebrating the comics.
