1946 - Welch was born in Midland, Texas on November 4, 1946.

 

1964 - Attended and graduated from Midland's Robert E. Lee High School.

 

1968 - Received her Bachelor of Science degree in Education at Southern Methodist University in Dallas and became a teacher at Longfellow Elementary School.

 

1973 - Obtained her masters degree in Library Science at University of Texas in Austin.

 

1974 - Worked as a librarian at Houston Public Library.

 

1977 - Worked as a librarian at Austin Independent District School. She met George W. Bush during a backyard barbeque of a common friend. Married Bush on November 5, 1977.

 

1981 - Gave birth to twin daughters.

 

1982-1990 - Became an active volunteer member to the following organizations: Friends of the Midland Public Library, Friends of Dallas Public Library Board Executive Committee, Parent-Teacher Association and the Community Partners Board of Child Protective Services. A member of the executive board of Junior League of Midland.

 

1995-2000 - Her husband was elected as the Governor of Texas and Laura Welch Bush became the First Lady of Texas.

 

2000 - When her husband was declared the winner in the 2000 Presidential Election, she became the First Lady of Texas.

 

2001 - After the inaguration of his husband, President George Bush, she worked on education and women's health issues and launched the first National Book Festival. After the 911 event, she became the first person to deliver the weekly presidential radio address.

 

2002 - Laura Bush was honored by the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity in recognition of her commitment to education.

 

2004 - Considered as the second most powerful woman in the United States and the fourth most powerful in the world by the Forbes Magazine.

 

2005 - She was honored by the American Library Association for her support to America's libraries and librarians.

 

2006 - Received an award from the Kuwait-American Foundation for her dedication to help improve the living conditions and education of children around the world.
