1856 - Ernest DeWitt Burton was born in Granville, Ohio. American scholar and educator.

1876 - Burton grew up in Ohio, Michigan, and Iowa, attended college and graduated at Denison University.

1908 - Burton was chosen to head a commission to investigate educational, social, and religious conditions in the Far East. John D. Rockefeller had received repeated requests from mission boards, the international YMCA, and other bodies to assist in their work in China and other countries.

1897 - He was the editor of the American Journal of Theology.

1923 - He became the President of the University of Chicago.

         - He was asked to succeed Harry Pratt Judson as president of the University.

1925 - An intestinal cancer was found in April, and within a month he was dead.
