1898 - Born on October 30th in Cleveland, Ohio. American politician.

1920 - He received his B.A. from Holy Cross College.

1923 - Earned his LL.B. from Western Reserve University School of Law.

         - Burke married Josephine Lyon and had 2 daughters.

1930-1936 - He was assistant county prosecutor.

1937 - The state attorney general appointed him special counsel to prosecute vote fraud.

1941 - Became Cleveland law director under Mayor Frank Lausche.

1945 - Elected mayor of Cleveland when Lausche became governor and served 4 terms.

         - He presided over a large capital-improvement program, including a lakefront airport built on landfill, the first downtown airport in the country.

1951 - He campaigned for a charter amendment passed giving the mayor power to appoint and dismiss the police chief, and helped establish a free municipal parking lot adjacent to the shoreway.

1953 - Lausche appointed Burke to fill Taft's Senate seat.

1964 - He married Evelyn Sedgwick.

         - He retired from politics but continued practicing law as senior partner in the law firm Burke, Haber & Berwick.

1971 - Died on December 5th.
