1800 - Born on the 9th May in Torrington, Connecticut.
1851-1855 - Worked as agent of Underground Railroad in Ohio.
1855 - Moved to Kansas to aid abolitionist cause in popular sovereignty struggle between pro-slavery and anti-slavery factions.
1856 - After murders by pro-slavery activists, led Pottawatomie Massacre killing five settlers suspected of pro-slavery beliefs.
Planned to establish anti-slavery base in mountains around Maryland-Virginia border, to serve as guerrilla base in raids on slaveholding regions.
1859 - Arrived in Harpers Ferry under the name Isaac Smith, he rented a farmhouse in nearby Maryland.
- Organized headquarters near Harpers Ferry, Virginia (present-day West Virginia).
- Led twenty-one followers in raid on federal arsenal in Harpers Ferry, occupying arsenal until captured by federal troops under Robert E. Lee.
Tried and convicted on charges of murder, treason, and promoting slave insurrection.
1859 - Executed On the morning of 2nd of December and becoming martyr in eyes of many abolitionists.
