- He served here for seven years, and made his name attacking bookies and undeground abortion providers, before running for, and winning, election as Attorney General of California.

1958 - He was the Democratic nominee for Governor of California.
- He defeated U.S. Senator William F. Knowland by a margin of nearly 20 percentage points.
1966 - He lost the election to Republican Ronald Reagan.
