1932 - Boumédienne was born in Aïn Hesseinia near Guelma on the 23rd of August.
1955 - He joined anti-French National Liberation Front (FLN) in the Algerian War of Independence.
1962 - He headed an powerful military faction within the government, and was made defence minister with the support of the Algerian leader Ahmed Ben Bella, whose ascent to power he had assisted as chief of staff.
1965 - He grew increasingly distrustful of Ben Bella's erratic style of government and ideological puritanism, and in June, Boumédienne seized power in a bloodless coup.
1978 - He died on the 27th of December of a rare blood disease, Waldenström macroglobulinemia, following unsuccessful treatment in Moscow.
