1947 - Born in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, on the 6th of June. He grew up in poverty after his father was killed following an industrial accident when David was 12 years old.
1967 - 1969 - Worked as a clerk typist.
1970 - 1988 - Became the youngest-ever councillor on Sheffield City Council.
1973 - 1981 - He was the lecturer in industrial relations and politics.
1973 - 1977 - Served at South Yorkshire County Council.
1980 - 1987 - Served as leader on Sheffield City Council.
1987 - Member of Parliament for Sheffield Brightside.

1992 - Joined the shadow cabinet as Shadow Health Secretary.
1994 - Became Shadow Education Secretary.
1997 - 2001 - He became the UK's first blind cabinet minister as Secretary of State for Education and Employment.
2001 - 2004 - Served as Home Secretary, he resigned after a scandal.
2005 - He was appointed Secretary of State for Work and Pensions.

       - Forced to resign on 2nd of November after a series of reports about his external business interests during his brief time outside the cabinet.

2006 - His audio diaries were published in his book The Blunkett tapes: My life in the bear pit.
