1776 - William Blackwood was born on the 20th of November. Scottish publisher and founder of the firm of William Blackwood & Sons.
1790 - At the age of 14, he was apprenticed to a firm of booksellers in Edinburgh.
1804 - Returned to Edinburgh and opened a shop in South Bridge Street.
- He established himself as a bookseller in Edinburgh.
1816 - He undertook the Scottish agency for John Murray and other London publishers, and gradually drifted into publishing on his own account, removing to Princes Street.
1817 - He started Blackwood's Magazine.
- Issued the first number of the Edinburgh Monthly Magazine on April 1st.
1834 - He died on 16th of September.
- William Blackwood was succeeded by his two sons, Alexander and Robert, who added a London branch to the firm.
