Blackwell, David Harold
1919 - Born on the 24th of April in Centralia, Illinois, the seventh African American to receive a Ph.D. in Mathematics, and is one of the eponyms of the Rao-Blackwell theorem.
1938 - Graduated at University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign.
1939 - Awarded his M.A. at University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign.
1941 - At the age of 22, he finished his Ph.D. in Statistics at University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign.
1944 - Dr. Blackwell joined the faculty of Howard University as an instructor.
1947 - Blackwell had risen to the rank of Full Professor and Chairman.
1950-1951 - Visiting Professor of Statistics at Stanford University.
1954 - He gave an invited address in probability at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Amsterdam.
- Appointed Professor of Statistics at the University of California at Berkeley, and was chairman of the Statistics Department.
1955 - Became the President of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics.
- Selected as Vice President of the American Statistical Association.
- He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society.
1956 - He was appointed chair of the Department of Statistics.
1965 - Became the first African American named to the National Academy of Sciences.
1979 - Blackwell won the von Neumann Theory Prize.
- Dr. Blackwell lives in Berkeley, California, where he remains active in mathematical research.
