1966 - He was appointed Titular Bishop of Ligura and Auxiliary Bishop of the archdiocese of Atlanta, Georgia.

         - He was ordained as bishop on the 26th of April.

1968 - He resigned as auxiliary bishop of Atlanta.

1972 - He became General Secretary of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops.

1982 - He was appointed Archbishop of Cincinnati, Ohio.

1983 - He elevated to Cardinal on the 2nd of February.

1996 - He was appointed Archbishop of Chicago.

         - He served as archbishop until his death on 14th of November from pancreatic cancer.

1997 - He wrote memoir "The Gift of Peace".
