Bentham, George
1800 - Born on September 22nd in Stoke near Portsmouth. English botanist.
1807 - At the age of seven he can speak French, German and Russian, and Swedish.
1823 - A visit to London, brought him into contact with the brilliant circle of English botanists.
1826 - Bentham's Catalogue des Plantes Indigènes des Pyrénées was published.
- He had been elected a fellow of the Linnean Society.
1829 - He was secretary of the Royal Horticultural Society.
1831 - He was called to the Bar but never practised.
1832 - Bentham's first major botanical work, Labiatarum Genera et Species, appeared.
1833 - He married Sarah, the youngest daughter of Sir Halford Brydges and his wife Sarah, née Gott, widow of Richard Whitcombe.
1842 - Moved to Pontrilas in Herefordshire.
1854 - He found the maintenance of a herbarium and library too expensive.
1855 - In London, he worked at Kew for five days a week, with a brief summer holiday.
1857 - Government sanctioned a scheme for the preparation of a series of Floras or descriptions in the English language of the indigenous plants of British colonies and possessions.
1861-1874 - He became its president, but grew autocratic in the chair and vacated it in resentment when a ruling was outvoted.
- Bentham was particularly associated with the preparation of the first of the famous Kew series of colonial floras: Flora Hongkongensis and Flora Australiensis, 7 vols., the manuscript of which was completed.
- Among his honours were an honorary LL.D., a royal medal, the C.M.G. for services to colonial science after the publication of Flora Australiensis and the Clarke medal of the Royal Society of New South Wales.
