1898 - Born on the 27th of April in Meran, Austria today in Italy.

 

1917 - He joined the U.S. Army but was not ordered to Europe because of his German heritage.

 

Became an officer and rose to second lieutenant.

 

1918 - Became naturalized as an American citizen.

 

1930s - He met May Massee the children's book editor at Viking Press who became a sort of partner.

 

1934 - Published a number of children's books beginning with Hansi.

 

1939 - First Madeline book was published and was actually rejected by Viking and published by Simon and

Schuster.

 

1950 - He wrote "Madeline's Rescue" and received Caldecott Medal 1953.

 

1962 - Ludwig Bemelmans died on 1st of October.
