1948 - Born on the 3rd of February in village of Wailakama, near Vemasse, on the north coast of East Timor.
1968 - Graduated from Dare minor seminary, outside Dili.
1969 - Apart from periods of practical training.
1974-1976 - Back in East Timor and in Macau and became a member of the Salesian Society.
1980 - He studied philosophy and theology before ordained a priest.
1981 - He returned to East Timor where he became a teacher then Director at the Salesian College at Fatumaca.
1983 - He was appointed Apostolic Administrator of the Dili diocese, becoming head of the East Timor church.
1988 - He was consecrated a Bishop of Lorium, Italy.
1989 - He wrote to the President of Portugal, the Pope, and the UN Secretary-General, calling for a UN referendum on the future of East Timor.
1996 - He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
2002 - Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation as Vicar Apostolic of Dili on the 26th of November.
