1854 – This year he opposed efforts to expand slavery and voted against the Kansas-Nebraska Bill.

 

1860 – The Southern slaveholders were outraged when the Republican Party nominated Abraham Lincoln as its presidential candidate. He was defeated by Lincoln who won this year election. Bell initially opposed secession; however, he later gave his full support to President Jefferson Davis and the Confederate Army.
