Beaumont, William
1785 - Born on November 21st in Lebanon, Connecticut. United States army surgeon, the first person to observe and study human digestion as it occurs in the stomach.
1811 - Trained to become a doctor through an apprenticeship with Dr. Truman Powell in St. Albans, Vermont.
1812-1815 - Beaumont served as a surgeon's mate in the army during the War.
- After the war ended he started a private practice in Plattsburgh, New York.
1819 - Rejoined the army as a surgeon and was assigned a location at Fort Mackinac.
1821 - Married Deborah Platt in Plattsburgh.
1822 - On the 6th of June an employee of the American Fur Company on Mackinac Island named Alexis St. Martin was accidentally shot in the stomach.
- Dr. Beaumont treated his wound, St. Martin survived with a hole in his stomach.
1825 - Relocated to Fort Niagara in New York, and Alexis St. Martin had come with him.
- In September, Alexis St. Martin moved to Canada, leaving Beaumont to concentrate on his duties as an army surgeon.
1826- Dr. Beaumont was stationed at Fort Howard in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
1828 - Transferred to St. Louis, Missouri. While en route to St. Louis.
- Beaumont was ordered to stop at Fort Crawford in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin to treat malaria.
1831 - Conducted another set of experiments on St. Martin, ranging from the simple observation of normal digestion to the effects that temperature and even emotions have on the digestive process.
1832 - In April, St. Martin again left for Canada.
- Beaumont left the army and moved to Washington, D.C.
1833 - Beaumont left Washington and returned to Plattsburgh, New York.
- Wrote a book titled Experiments and Observations on the Gastric Juice and the Physiology of Digestion.
1834 - Returned to the army and was stationed at St. Louis.
1839 - He left the service and maintained a private practice in St. Louis.
1853 - Beaumont died on 25th of April in St. Louis, Missouri.
