1931 - Jacob Dyneley Beam began his career in foreign service serving in Geneva.

1957-1961 - Served as US ambassador to Poland.

 

1966-1969 - US Ambassador to Czechoslovakia during the Soviet invasion of that country.

 

1969-1974 - Appointed as US ambassador to Soviet Union.

 

1974-1977 - Worked as director of Radio Free Europe.
