1894-1899 - Served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives.

 

1897-1899 -Became the Speaker of the House from Massachusetts.

 

1900-1903 - Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts.

 

1903-1905 - Elected Governor of Massachusetts.

 

Bates retired to his private law practice in Boston.

 

1917-1919 - Bates was a delegate to the Massachusetts Constitutional Convention.

 

1946 - John Lewis Bates died 8th of June.

 

Member of the American Bar Association of the Freemasons, the Odd Fellows, and of Beta Theta Pi.
