Barry, Thomas

1897 - Thomas (Tom) Barry was born on the 1st of July in Rosscarbery, County Cork, Ireland.

1915 - He enlisted in the British Army and fought in Mesopotamia.

1920 - Barry joined the Irish Republican Army.(IRA)

         - Barry's unit ambushed and killed almost a whole platoon of British Auxiliaries at Kilmichael, County Cork.

1921 - Barry and 104 men, divided into seven sections, broke out of an encirclement of 1,200 strong British force from the Essex Regiment.

1922 - 1923 - He led his men in the capture of a string of towns across the south midlands.

         - Barry fought on the Republican side in the Irish Civil War.

1922 - Imprisoned by the Irish Free State after the Battle of Dublin.

1923 - Arrested shortly before Aiken's order to "dump arms".

1924 - Barry was released in prison.

1925 - Proprosed that the IRA surrender their arms and ammunition to the Free State.

1927-1965 - Served as general superintendent of Cork Harbour Commission.

1937 - Barry succeeded Seán MacBride as chief of staff, but resigned in 1938.

1940 - Barry was made responsible for Intelligence in the Irish Army's Southern Command.

1941 - He was denounced by the IRA for writing for the Irish Army's journal.

1949 - Published his memoirs of the Irish War of Independence, Guerilla Days in Ireland.

1980 - He died on 2nd of July in a Cork hospital.
