Francis Thornhill Baring, 1st Baron Northbrook a British Whig politician.


1823 - Baring was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford and called to the bar, Lincoln's Inn.


1826-1865 - Francis Thornhill Baring served as Member of Parliament for Portsmouth.


1830-1834 - He was the Lord of the Treasury.


1834 - Francis Thornhill Baring was the Secretary to the Treasury.


1835-1839 - He served again as Secretary to the Treasury.


1839-1841 - Francis Thornhill Baring entered the cabinet as Chancellor of the Exchequer, serving until the fall of the Melbourne government.


1849-1852 - He returned to the cabinet, replacing Lord Auckland as First Lord of the Admiralty in Russell's cabinet.


1866 - Francis Thornhill Baring was created Baron Northbrook.


Baring was a member of the famous Baring banking family.
