Bao Dai

1913 - Born Prince Nguyen Vinh Thuy in Hue  the capital of Vietnam.

1926-1945 - Became the emperor of Vietnam.

Educated at lycée Condorcet and the Paris Institute of Political Studies in France.

1934 - On 20th of March at the imperial city of Hue, Bao Dai married Jeanne Marie-Thérèse.

1945 - Abdicated to serve as supreme advisor to Ho Chi Minh.

1949 - Returned to Vietnam at French request, but failed to receive widespread popular recognition.

1949-1955 - Became the king of South Vietnam.

1955 - He deposed, after abolition of monarchy following the referendum initiated by Ngo Dinh Diem.

         - Bao Dai was retired to exile in France.

1972 - Issued a public statement in France, and appealed to the Vietnamese people for national reconciliation.

1982 - Emperor Bao Dai and 'Imperial Princess' Monique V)nh Thuy along with others visited the United States.

1997 - Bao Dai died on 30th of July in a military hospital in Paris.
