1906 - Hastings Kamuzu Banda was born near Kasungu in Malawi.


1928 - Studied in the high school section of Wilberforce Institute in Wilberforce, Ohio.


1931 - Graduated premedical from University of Chicago, with major in history.


1937 - Banda finished medicine at Meharry Medical College in Tennessee.


1941 - Graduated from the School of Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of the University of Edinburgh.


1942-1945 - Banda worked as a doctor in North Shields.


1946 - Represented the Nyasaland African Congress at the fifth Pan African Congress in Manchester.


1959 - He was imprisoned in Gwelo (now Gweru) in Southern Rhodesia.


1960 - Released from prison in April and invited to London for talks aimed at bringing about independence.


1961 - Elections were held in August.


1963 - Became de facto Prime Minister of Nyasaland--a title granted to him formally on 1st of February.


1964 - Banda became the independent Commonwealth of Malawi.


1966 - Banda became the first President of Malawi on 6th of July.


1970 - The congress of the MCP declared Banda its president for life.


1971 - The legislature declared Banda President for Life of Malawi.


1993 - He established a strong, one-party control of Malawi.


1994 - Defeated in the 1994 elections.


1997 - Banda died on 25th of November in a hospital in South Africa.
