1934 - Born on the 26th of July in Bué in Bourges in France.
1956 - He entered the seminary and later attended the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome where he earned a licentiate in philosophy and in theology.
1961 - He was ordained on the 3rd of September.
1962 - His ordaination he was a faculty member of the seminary where he was ordianed.
1967 - He was transferred, teaching Tours.
1982 - Pope John Paul II appointed him as Bishop of Dijon on the 6th of November.
1988 - He was transferred to the Metropolitan see of Reims.
1995 - Catholic archbishop of Lyons on the 27th of May.
1998 - Archbishop Balland was created and proclaimed Cardinal Priest in the consistory on the 21st of February with the titular church of San Pietro in Vincoli.
- Died on the 1st March in Lyon, less than a month after becoming a cardinal.
