1475 - Born in Jerez de los Caballeros, Castile, Spain.
European discoverer of the Pacific Ocean and a leading figure among the Spanish explorers and conquerors of America.
1500 - Traveled to the New World land after some explorations settled on the island of Hispaniola.
1501 - Crossed the Caribbean coasts from the east of Panama, along the Colombian coast, through the Gulf of Urabá toward Cabo de La Vela.
1508 - Created two new territories in the region between El Cabo de la Vela (near the eastern border of Colombia) and El Cabo de Gracias a Dios (the border between Honduras and Nicaragua).
1510 - Founded the settlement of Santa María la Antigua del Darién in present-day Panama.
1509 - Balboa set sail as a stowaway, hiding inside a barrel together with his dog Leoncico.
1513 - Led an expedition from Darién to search for a new sea reportedly to the south and for gold.
The new governor was reportedly jealous of Balboa and ordered him to be arrest on charges of treason.
1519 - Balboa was beheaded after a brief trial on 15th of January.
