Bak, Per
1948 - Born on December 8th in Bronderslev, Denmark. Danish theoretical physicist who helped to develop the concept of "self-organized criticality".
1974 - He received a doctorate and went to work at the Brookhaven lab.
1987 - He and two post-doctoral researchers, Dr. Chao Tang and Dr. Kurt Wiesenfeld, presented their ideas on self-organized criticality in a much-cited paper in Physical Review Letters.
1996 - He took his ideas to a general readership with his ambitiously titled book "How Nature Works".
2000 - Dr. Bak pursued the implications of his theory at a number of institutions, including the Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, New York, the Santa Fe Institute in New Mexico, the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen and the Imperial College in London, where he became a professor.
2001 - Dr. Bak learned that he had myelodysplastic syndrome, sometimes called smoldering leukemia.
2002 - Died on October 16th in Copenhagen at the age of 54.
