1893 - Born on March 7th in Altmar, New York. American painter Milton Avery studied life drawing and painting in Hartford, Connecticut.
- Noted in his later years for depicting the human figure as a contoured flat pattern in vivid colours.
1913 - He studied briefly at the League of Art Students, but he was largely self-taught.
1925 - After moving to New York, Avery was introduced to the work of Matisse and Picasso, both of whose works inspired the artist to simplify his forms into broad areas of close-valued color.
1928 - He presented his first one-man show in New York City.
1933 - He also painted seascapes in a rather more Expressionist style and began to make drypoints.
1950 - He launched a series of monotypes.
1965 - Died on January 3rd in New York City.
