Henry Atkinson was a U.S. army officer.
1808 - Entered the army as a captain in the infantry, serving at various outposts on the Western frontier.
1812 - Moved to New York and was promoted to colonel in the Regular Army.
1815 - Commanded the 6th U.S. Infantry.
1819-1825 - He led two expeditions to the Yellowstone River.
1821 - He was advanced to the grade of Brigadier-General 13 May 1821, and was made adjutant-general 21st of June.
1832 - Appointed brevet brigadier general and was in overall command of U.S. forces during the Black Hawk War.
- He delivered the final blow to the Black Hawk Indians at the Battle of Bad Axe.
Superintended removal of the Winnebago to Iowa. Jefferson Barracks (near St. Louis) and Fort Leavenworth were begun under his direction.
1842 - He died at Jefferson Barracks, Mo., 14th of June.
