1949-1955 - Michael Francis Atiyah was brought up in the Middle East and went to Cambridge University.
1963-1969 - He has been a Professor at Oxford and Princeton and was Master of Trinity College, Cambridge and Director of the Isaac Newton Institute.
- He has worked on algebraic geometry, algebraic topology, index theory of differential operators, and the mathematics of quantum field theory, where he has been particularly concerned with bridging the gap between mathematicians and physicists.
- He was awarded the Fields Medal.
1983 - Atiyah was knighted.
1990-1995 - He was President of the Royal Society and is now an Honorary Professor at the University of Edinburgh.
- Was made a member of the Order of Merit.
2004 - Was awarded with the Abel Prize (jointly with Isadore Singer).
