Athanasios Sarantopoulos was born in Tripolis, Arcadia Greece of Greek parents Dimitrios Sarantopoulos from Valtetsi and Georgia Theodoropoulou from Perpatari. His father is a war veteran and his mother a housewife.
He holds a Ph.D. in Electrical & Computer Engineering from the University of Akron and a Master of Engineering and a Bachelor of Engineering (Cum Laude) Degree from Youngstown State University (YSU).
While in college he was awarded several scholarships and honors including the Faraday Award at the University of Akron.
He was inducted into Tau Beta Pi, Pi Mu Epsilon, Phi Kappa Phi, Eta Kappa Nu, the Order of the Engineer, and the Order of AHEPA.
He worked as Director of the Greek School of Saint John's Greek Orthodox Church of Boardman, Ohio.
He co-hosted the weekly radio program "The Hellenic Hour" at the WKTL Radio Station in Struthers, Ohio.
He served as President of the Federation of International Students of YSU, Historian of Tau Beta Pi, Academic Adviser of the Hellenic Club of the University of Akron, and Member of the Board of Directors of the Pan-Arcadian Federation of America Midwest District.
In his graduate studies he specialized in Control Systems and System Simulation. He did extensive research work funded by the University of Akron in the areas of Automatic Control, System Modeling and Simulation. He also taught laboratory courses at the EE Department of the University of Akron.
His doctoral research dealt with Distributed Parameter System Modeling for Propulsion Systems and was funded by NASA Lewis Research Center [now NASA Glenn Research Center].
Upon his return to Athens he worked at the University of Indianapolis and as a private consultant.
Since January 2002 he has been an employee of the Hellenic National Meteorological Service, Division of Climatology-Applications.
His current research interests are in the areas of Climatology, Biometeorology, and Quality Control of Meteorological Observations. He is in charge of providing Climatological and Meteorological data to the public and private sector.
He is member of IEEE, AFCEA, Technical Chamber of Greece, Administrative Chamber of Greece-Association of Administrative Scientists, Hellenic Meteorological Society, Greek Computer Society, Hellenic Society of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, HellasGIS, Hellenic Electronic Center, Hellenic Linux Users Group, Arcadian Association of Glyfada, and Society of Tripolitans of Attica.
He currently holds the position of Vice President & Director of Education of the Order of AHEPA Hellas District.
In July 2007 he and Dr. Olga Sarantopoulos, General Secretary of World Council of Hellenes Abroad established the Hellenic Affairs Forum [http://groups.google.com/group/hellenic-affairs-forum].
