1884 - Born in Stavanger, South West Norway. Lutheran bishop.
1937 - After some years as a teacher, pastor, and prison chaplain, he became Bishop of Tromsø and then Bishop of Oslo and Primate of the Norwegian Church.
1941 - He led the Church's opposition to the Quisling government, and was imprisoned.
1950 - He was a strong supporter of the ecumenical movement, becoming a president of the World Council of Churches.
